FutureForFilm automated system for scanning, quality control, restoration and access of film content
FutureForFilm is a European Eurostars project funded by national funding bodies. In Austria it is the FFG.
Project partners:
- MWA Nova Germany
- Joanneum Research Austria
- Medicendi Swizerland
FutureForFilm will build an integrated prototype system allowing to digitise analogue film media in a quality controlled way, to restore it, and to make this content accessible and exploitable in a highly automated way. For each of these workflow steps significant technical innovations will be developed, and all of them will be technically integrated for the first time in a complete, cost efficient, high quality, future proof overall workflow.
Content stored on film is culturally as well as commercially valuable. Today film digitisation quality is too low for long term digital preservation, digitisation cost is too high for commercial mass exploitation, consequently most film content is unavailable for cultural heritage as well as commercial use.
FutureForFilm will enable full digital, high quality preservation at significantly reduced cost, its advanced content improvement and access techniques will drive commercial use and income, which in turn will allow for large scale film digitisation projects.
